International investigators, including two Australians, who have reached the wreckage of MH17 have located more victims' remains and collected evidence from the crash site in eastern Ukraine.
The development comes as federal MP Clive Palmer demands Australian AFP officers be brought home because he says their mission is pointless and too dangerous.
Eight Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe officials, and two Australian and two Dutch investigators finally reached the crash site late Thursday, after being thwarted by heavy fighting between Ukrainian and Russian-backed rebels in the area all week.
The dozen officials spent just 85 minutes at the scene but Fairfax Media understands they were able to collect evidence and locate the remains of victims in that time.
Prime Minister Tony Abbott says the plan now is to send in a larger team with equipment capable of retrieving the remains.
"It is a dangerous part of the world and this is a risky mission," he said in Sydney on Friday.
The team is unarmed and Mr Palmer has told ABC radio he doesn't see any point to the mission.
"I just don't think it's realistic to have a lot of people who are alive worrying about recovering remains if it's going to put anyone's life in danger," he said.
Mr Palmer said he was "reluctant" to raise his concerns but did not want to see more Australians' lives put at risk.
"We know it's a war zone, we don't want to have Australians in a war zone if we can avoid it."
Mr Palmer made the comments before the team of investigators reached the site and without directly responding, Mr Abbott said the government did not "lightly put Australian personnel in harm's way".
