The 2014 Emmy Awards red carpet has been rolled up, but we're still talking about the hair.

Updos were definitely the real winners on the red carpet and there were some great takes on classic looks.

Top points go to Modern Family actress Sarah Hyland's look: her relaxed and whispy version of the ballerina bun was a gorgeous look, serious enough for the red carpet without looking uptight.

January Jones' tightly rolled chignon was also a winner. The chignon is a classic, and Jones updated it with wet-look hair and a super snug roll.

Laura Prepon also updated the chignon, but opted for an oversized look, pinned at the side. A few carefully placed whisps of hair completed her look.

Jessica Williams' braided quiff really stood out but the bold look was softened by the loose ponytail at the back. Her asymmetrical look must have been heavy, too: later at an after-party Williams took the big braid out.

Teyonah Parris' slick hairstyle was a real winner too. The tightly pulled sides complemented the giant, loosely plaited bun perched on top of her head. Another great take on the classic ballerina bun.

Classic updos were still in, however, with a number of actresses proving why these styles keep coming back.

Allison Williams stuck to the classic bun, but the smooth look is classic for a reason. It works with almost any red carpet outfit and it certainly worked with hers.

Hayden Panettiere went for a loose updo with plenty of volume and added a sparkly headband for a modern twist.

Julianna Margulies chose a similar look, but stuck to a dark palate with a black double headband holding her style in place.

Katherine Heigl went for a classic messy bun, cleverly gaining volume by loosely pulling her hair back (and probably adding plenty of hairspray) into the lower bun.

Another red carpet hair trend was blonde – and lots of it.

Modern Family actress Sofia Vergara appears to have gone a lighter shade of golden brown and Girls actress Lena Dunham rocked her super new platinum blonde look on the red carpet as well.

The boys really stole the show when it came to Emmys updos, however.

Thanks to the likes of Jared Leto, the man bun has become more and more popular and a couple of men went for a more polished look on the red carpet.

Game of Thrones actor Kit Harington decided to pull back his long curly hair for the awards night – and the look really suits him.

The best updo of the night, for style, execution and surprise factor belonged to True Detective director Cary Fukunaga.

His french braids were not only beautiful done – tight, inside-out braids like that aren't the easiest – but they also suited him down to a tee.
