MARGARET River Police say an elderly woman involved in a car accident last week had lost control of her vehicle minutes after breaking her wrist in a supermarket fall.
The Australind woman was trapped behind the steering wheel of her car on Wednesday after the accident at the intersection of Fearn Avenue and Wallcliffe Road.
Margaret River Fire and Rescue personnel cut the driver's door from the vehicle to help free the woman.
Wallcliffe Road was blocked from Bussell Highway for up to an hour.
The woman was taken by ambulance to Margaret River Hospital, but police say she was uninjured as a result of the accident and presumably did not realise her wrist had been broken in the fall at Coles supermarket.
Margaret River Police officer-in-charge Sergeant Brett Cassidy said no charges had been laid, however the incident had been referred to the Department of Transport for assessment of the woman's fitness to drive.
It is believed the Nissan Pathfinder left the Fearn Avenue intersection and collided with a Nissan X-Trail travelling west along Wallcliffe Road.
The occupants of the X-Trail were from the Perth suburb of Aubin Grove and were not injured.
Rescuers had difficulty moving the woman with the door stuck and the steering wheel pushed in.
Sergeant Cassidy appealed for anyone who witnessed the accident to contact Margaret River Police.
