With nominations for the Vasse by-election closing at midday on Friday, history points to Liberal candidate Libby Mettam retaining the seat held by former Treasurer Troy Buswell.
The by-election on October 18 was called following the resignation of disgraced former Treasurer Troy Buswell earlier this month.
Nominations for the seat close at midday on Thursday for the major parties and at midday Friday for independents, with candidates from three major parties announced so far.
The Liberals have nominated Ms Mettam, a former journalist and current media advisor to state MP Barry House, while the Greens have put forward structural engineer Michael Baldock and the Nationals local businessman Peter Gordon.
Labor have already ruled themselves out of the race, declining to nominate a candidate in the belief Vasse is a safe Liberal seat.
Despite the controversy surrounding Mr Buswell, who held the seat for eight years and won the 2013 election with over 57 per cent of the vote, history agrees with Labor.
Since 2006, only one of six by-elections has resulted in a change of party, with the Greens' Adele Carles capturing the seat of Fremantle following the resignation of Jim McGinty in 2009.
A succession of Liberal Party members have held Vasse since its inception in 1950, however former Liberal Party member Bernie Masters held the seat for one year as an independent after his resignation from the party following a preselection defeat by Mr Buswell.
Mr Masters, who ran in the 2013 election as an independent candidate for Vasse, confirmed he will not be nominating for the by-election.
Perennial political candidate Teresa van Lieshout took to wearing a black bikini while fishing on the beach to announce her candidacy for the seat.
Ms van Lieshout has previously run unsuccessfully in several elections including the 2013 state and federal elections, and the 2014 re-run Senate election in WA.
The prolific YouTuber made headlines last year after Palmer United Party leader Clive Palmer disendorsed her as a candidate for not toeing the party line, just 12 days after she was anointed.
