Local doctor Katina Koukourou will be competing in the New York marathon on Sunday, November 2.
A spontaneous decision to compete in the event for her 40th birthday has seen Dr Koukourou train for the past few weeks in preparation, simultaneously running her full time business and looking after her two year old.
Once a state runner, Ms Koukourou sought the assistance of her former trainer to help her get back into the swing of things.
As a part of her New York marathon event, Ms Koukourou is donating all funds raised as a part of her run towards the Jodi Lee Foundation.
The Jodi lee Foundation was started to raise awareness about bowel cancer, with a close friend of Dr Koukourou’s suggesting the foundation to her.
Dr Koukourou’s Lifestyle Medical clinic in Margaret River specialises in preventative measures to treat diseases, so the Jodi Lee Foundation was a clear choice for her fundraising.
Despite a recent sickness, Dr Koukourou decided she wasn’t going to let anything stop her from finishing the race.
“It’s about practising what I preach and promoting a healthy lifestyle,” Dr Koukourou said.
The Jodi Lee Foundation team will be wearing black tutus at the marathon to commemorate Jodi.
