A joint trial by the State Government and the RAC to optimise traffic signals through innovative traffic modelling software has resulted in a 34 per cent reduction in traffic queues and a 20 per cent improvement in travel times.
On Sunday, Transport Minister Dean Nalder revealed the results of the landmark trial on Orrong Road between Francisco and Oats streets in Rivervale, and thanked the RAC for their partnership.
"During the trial, traffic signal cycle times were shortened by as much as 50 seconds," Mr Nalder said.
"This, along with changes to the signal settings, reduced traffic queues by up to 34 per cent and improved journey times by as much as 20 per cent.
"I thank the RAC for providing the funding for the development of the trial which included before and after studies to demonstrate the improvements made.
"In addition to the work with the RAC, Main Roads has identified nine sections of six key corridors within the metropolitan area suitable for improvement.
"Reviewing traffic signals along these corridors will not only deliver improvements to the local area, but will also help to improve the road network overall.
"Traffic signal optimisation is all about making our existing infrastructure work harder and smarter, and looking at all of the available options to Keep Perth Moving."
In total, nine new traffic signal optimisation projects covering more than 90 sets of traffic signals is expected to be implemented over the next 10 months.
"By the time the full program is implemented, it is estimated about 300,000 daily journeys across Perth will experience some improvement," Mr Nalder said.
