An Oakford family has been left shocked and distraught after they found their pet cat shot dead in their street.
The cat's owner made the grisly discovery after the pet, named Freya, failed to return to the Tuart Road home early this week.
The RSPCA has called for anyone who may have seen the incident or know about the shooting to come forward.
Freya was found with a suspicious wound to the lower abdomen which a vet determined was caused by metallic fragments, possible gunshot pellets.
Freya's death is one of about 6100 reports of animal cruelty which came from more than 20,000 calls made to RSPCA WA during 2013-14.
"We are treating this incident very seriously, as cases of animal cruelty such as this are utterly unacceptable and will not be tolerated," RSPCA chief inspector Amanda Swift said.
The maximum penalty under the Animal Welfare Act is a $50,000 fine or five years imprisonment and Ms Swift reminded the public to request assistance if they had an issue with any animal.
"It's important for all members of the community to remember to not take matters into their own hands," she said.
"If you are having issues with cats in your neighbourhood the RSPCA advises you to communicate with your neighbours in the first instance, before seeking advice from your local council."
