LOCAL fire crews are attending a property near Gardiner Road in Cowaramup after reports of thick black smoke coming from the area.
A Shire of Augusta Margaret River ranger spotted the smoke while travelling north along Bussell Highway.
The ranger pulled over to analyse the situation before calling emergency services.
Residents of Margaret River and near by areas have been advised to take precautionary measures by to staying away from the area and remaining inside.
“The smoke is fortunately being blown away from residential areas but I would encourage people to be cautious, especially those with asthma or breathing difficulties,” Augusta Margaret River Environmental Health manager Alison Edmunds said.
“If anyone has had direct exposure to the smoke and is feeling unwell I would advise them to seek medical attention.”
Health officers are monitoring the scene currently.
It is not known if the fires were intentionally lit.
