THE Augusta Adventure race came to life over the weekend with more than 1800 competitors taking to the field.
Igniting at the Cape Leeuwin lighthouse, racers took on a 13.5 kilometre coastal run, a shortened 1.5 kilometre ocean swim, a shortened eight kilometre ocean paddle followed by a 32 kilometre mountain bike leg and finished with a 2.5 kilometre beach run.
Dominating the event was New Zealander Braden Currie, taking out the crown for the second year in a row.
“It was perfect conditions for racing and we had a lot of fun out there,” Currie said.
“Augusta is an incredibly scenic place, it’s really beautiful and the course is a real contrast to the conditions we have at home in New Zealand.”
With Currie taking out the top spot finishing the race in three hours and 47 minutes, Dougal Allan followed closely behind in second and Ben Allen hot on his heels finished in third out of the males.
The female competitors were too close for comfort, with Elizabeth Dornom stealing first place from Kristen Gadsdon by under a minute.
“Kristen pushed me the whole way and I had a bit of a spill in the mountain bike, but I managed to pull away from her in the last run,” Dornom said.
“It was an amazing race.”
Rachel Smith followed to nab the third place position in the females.
O’Neill Nesbit landed first in the teams, followed by Run Fat Boy Run and Think kayak to round off third place.
In the midst of the competition was a second race, with the Trans-Tasman Trophy being fought over between the Australian and New Zealander competitors.
The Australian athletes were too strong a team, with Ben Allen, Jarad Kohlar and Peri Gray taking out the cup for the tri Tasman team.
A highlight of the event was the huge amount of spectators and supporters throughout the course, showing their enthusiasm all the way to the finish line.
