CRUISE ships may sail into Augusta in 2015 if a bid to secure a cruise shipping tender in the Small Augusta Boat Harbour is successful.
Representatives from Augusta-Margaret River Shire, the Augusta Margaret River Tourism Association and South West Development Commission have joined forces in the bid.
Meeting for the first time last month, the group is investigating cruise ship market opportunities and visitor service requirements, aiming to present findings to Tourism WA in 2013.
Shire president and group chair Ray Colyer said work done to date showed promising signs that the venture could be ready to launch in 2015.
“Augusta is a stunning destination that is often overshadowed and forgotten with the use of the Margaret River brand name,” he said.
“This venture has the potential to reinvigorate the town and generate significant economic benefits for the wider Capes Region.
“Cruise ship passengers would provide a new source of visitors from the traditional self-drive market.
“I very much look forward to seeing the introduction of the ships and the consequential growth of the local economy.”
Requirements to be investigated by the group include visitor information outlets, cruise ship markets, shuttle bus services and welcoming formalities.
“We need to cement Augusta on cruise ship itinerary and ensure that it is a must-see destination for cruise ship passengers by providing a first class experience,” Cr Colyer said.
“We can do this by offering a high quality and after-sales experience.
“Local tour operators, existing and new, will be critical in ensuring this experience.
“The working group will be consulting business owners and operators in the coming months.
“We will assist them with expanding and adapting their services and promotions to target the cruise ship market.”
The Small Augusta Boat Harbour Cruise Ship Working Group will seek input from relevant stakeholders and the community in the coming months.
“The working group intends to present a thoroughly researched and professional bid to Tourism WA next year so we can get the ball rolling on a tender boat service,” he said.
