Outgoing ACT Senator Kate Lundy will become an NRMA board member for the ACT and south coast region when she formally retires from federal politics.
Ms Lundy's appointment was announced on Thursday morning and she will replace ACT NRMA director Alan Evans, whose fixed 12-year term will expire on January 17.
"While I leave my role as an Australian senator with just a little sadness, this latest challenge as the NRMA director for the region of Mann will enable me to continue doing what I have committed my whole life to – representing my local community," said Ms Lundy.
"I have been a Canberran most of my life and by definition the issues that matter to our local NRMA members matter to me."
When Ms Lundy announced her retirement from from federal politics in late November, she told her Labor colleagues she was "keen to do some work in the technology space which has long been a passion of mine".
She said it had become "a rare luxury to be able to choose your own time of leaving" federal politics and did not feel pressured to go by any of her colleagues.
In a statement, Ms Lundy said would use her board position to make sure local motorists were "not over-charged at the pump" or "over-burdened by excessive taxes".
"I will fight hard to secure more funding for local roads because the link between better roads and saving lives is indisputable," she said.
Lundy will be appointed to the board on March 31 when she formally resigns from the Senate and will replace Mr Evans, who was appointed to the board in 2002 and served as NRMA president for three years.
"Representing the ACT and south coast on the NRMA board has been a huge honour over the last 12 years and I want to thank our local NRMA members for their ongoing support of me and our wonderful mutual," said Mr Evans.
"In my time as director and as a former president I have been part of a transformation that has ensured the long-term future of the NRMA.
"I have had the privilege to speak out on the issues that matter to our members and over the last 12 years the NRMA has achieved some considerable wins."
Ms Lundy said her experience as an senator made her "acutely aware" of how increasing cost of living pressures could affect families in the ACT.
"NRMA Members are a well-defined group with an acute knowledge of what good service delivery means," she said.
"It is my intention to work hard to continue delivering that level of representation and service."
