MARGARET River resident Clare Smith was heartbroken on Thursday as she attended the rally to save bushland at Riverslea’s Darch Brook.
About 15 community members and their children gathered there to protest the Walsec housing development, which proposes to clear hundreds of trees to build more than 70 homes.
Was it a coincidence that Redtail Black Cockatoos flew over a few minutes ago, calling loudly?

Ms Smith shared her thoughts as she observed the scene.
“From the sounds drifting in on the breeze, the clearing of some of the Riverslea bush has started,” she reported.
“Was it a coincidence that Redtail Black Cockatoos flew over a few minutes ago, calling loudly?
“Every tree that is pushed over is a loss.
“Even if there was a replant-elsewhere policy, the time lag between this loss and the next one being mature enough to allow cockatoos nesting hollows is huge, and we have been told they could be gone in 20 years.
“My heart is breaking.”
