PEOPLE who have trouble finding their friend’s homes for the first time may never have to listen to vague directions again if the Shire of Augusta Margaret River implements a new law.
The Shire received advice from the Department of Local Government and Communities about the local law adoption process in regards to the proposed ‘Street Numbering Local Law 2015’.
The law proposes that all land owners must display and maintain a street number.
Other local governments such as the City of Armadale have adopted the law, and Augusta-Margaret River’s proposal has been based on this.
Shire Councillors have been asked to note the purpose and effect of the street numbering law at next Wednesday’s ordinary meeting.
Councillors will vote on whether to start the process to adopt the law.
If the vote is carried, the Shire will advertise its intention to make a new local law in state and local newspapers for six weeks.
The report in the meeting’s agenda states it is important all urban and rural properties have a visible street number so they can be easily located by emergency services, Australia Post and visitors.
“Some properties have not installed or maintained street numbers, and the Shire does not currently have the head of power to enforce this,” the report stated.
“Street numbers are generally not visually intrusive.
“The cost to residents and businesses of providing and maintaining a street number is minimal.”
