He has already been dubbed 'The Digger Prince' and likely deployment for Captain Harry Wales, reportedly soon to be seconded to Australian units for 'several weeks', could be to Darwin or Melbourne.
Royal Commentator Robert Jobson, who broke the story in London's Evening Standard told Fairfax Media on Saturday: "He loved Australia when he made his short visit and wanted to spend more time there. He will carry out other non military engagements too."
The report said Prince Harry, 30, is to leave the armed forces this year but before his active military duties end he will move to Australia and later spend time in New Zealand.
Harry is then expected to join his father Prince Charles at the 100th anniversary Anzac Day dawn service at Gallipoli in April.
Neil James, Executive Director of the Australian Defence Association said there was an existing long-term exchange programme between the two militaries involving hundreds of people in both directions.
"There's plenty of Australian units he could serve with largely based in Brisbane, Darwin or Townsville where there are cavalry units and the attack helicopters are in Darwin," he said.
"There's nothing special about this and in many ways it is probably a clever idea. It's no different to any other British officer serving here except this one is a bit more well known."
Former army captain and peacekeeper and Parliamentary Secretary to the Premier, David Elliot MP said Prince Harry wouldn't come all this way 'to do a staff job'.
The Defence Department, Kensington Palace or the Governor-General's office were not prepared to comment on the report but local monarchist groups were quick to support it.
'Our Warrior Prince will soon be the Digger Prince' the Facebook page of the Australians for Constitutional Monarchy' declared.
A rival monarchy group even claimed some of the credit.
'A year or more ago the Australian Monarchist League petitioned Buckingham Palace, at the request of our young monarchists, that Prince Harry be seconded to the Australian Defence Force for whatever period may be decided upon,' it said in a press release.
'We are delighted that this appears now to be happening and are certain that the experience gained by His Royal Highness will bring him closer to Australia and Australians and vice-versa.'
If the report is confirmed, then Fleet Street will also be planning its deployment and manoeuvres as well.
