ONE person’s trash is another person’s treasure is the concept behind the workshop about to take the Emergence Creative Festival by storm next Wednesday.
‘Up-cycled’ was formulated through the collaborative effort of Dune Haggar and Jean Paul Horre` as the two creatives join forces to make the public take a fresh look on old concepts.
Mr Horre` questions the need for humanity to always be throwing out everything once its time has passed, with verge chuck outs causing him to take old furniture and give it a second life.
“I’m trying to address that cycle,” Mr Horre` said.
“I think the timing is right for this to start.”
Mr Horre` said we were living in a society of consumerism and impulse buys, which we were all guilty of contributing to, himself included.
It is the act of taking something and turning it into something else that Mr Horre` said he wished to develop throughout the community.
Mr Horre’ takes old furniture and prints his photography onto the wood, taking a former broken concept and turning it into a renewed creation, something he feels everyone has the ability to do.
“It’s a different way of thinking,” he said.
From turning old computer casings into a blank canvas with a statement, or covering juice jars with a lick of spray paint to turn it into a vase for flowers or garden herbs, Mr Horre` said the possibilities were endless for what you could create; it’s a matter of taking a small step towards reducing our carbon footprint.
“They’re all statement pieces; the world is going green,” Mr Horre` said.
He said the ideas behind his designs were still in a prototype phase, he only made his creations as he found them, yet it was the attitude, the enthusiasm for the concept that he sought in others.
His serendipitous hope is for this same enthusiasm to be displayed towards the workshop.
“Once you do something, it empowers you,” Mr Horre` said.
“I have the energy and passion, but I am still shaping it.”
The organic gardens in Margaret River will provide the back drop for the discussion on what's possible for the everyday individual to up-cycle something.
This will be assisted by a live up-cycle from Mr Horre` and Mr Haggar.
