Daniel Kerr just wants to get on with his life and do an "honest day's work".
But the troubled former-AFL star's ambitions are still hindered by controversy and a looming court case.
Kerr, 31, turned up to Perth Magistrates Court on Tuesday in a dark, crinkled suit with a striped shirt and no tie. With bags under his eyes, he looked tired and solemn leading up to his appearance before the magistrate.
But his case into an incident in which he is accused of splashing petrol around a suburban Perth home proved an anti-climax for the media when it was adjourned until May 19.
The West Coast premiership-winning player was arrested in November last year after police were called to a late night altercation at a house in the Perth Suburb of Glendalough.
It is alleged Kerr threatened to harm people and burn the house down and he was subsequently charged with two counts of endangering the life, health or safety of a person.
Kerr had his bail conditions eased last year so he could attend two weddings, one in Midland and the other in Dunsborough.
And Kerr again had his bail conditions altered in March so he could pursue a football career in WA's Great Southern region with Denmark-Walpole Football Club.
The All-Australian says he just wants to get through the court case and get on with his life.
"I understand it's something I have to do and it's something I have to get past," Kerr said.
But his attempts to start afresh have been tainted by controversy, which has long followed Kerr.
Just days after it was revealed that Kerr intended to head south of Perth to reinvigorate his football career, reports emerged of a fire causing $100,000 worth of damage at the home of his estranged wife Natasha Pozo.
Outside court, hounded by a hungry pack of hustling reporters, one asked the footballer, who was then looking more upbeat, if he had plans to fix the burnt-out house in the suburb of Wembley.
"I've pretty much had to go down to Denmark to start my new job so it's on the back burner at the minute, actually," Kerr replied.
The Denmark-Walpole Football Club may provide another shining light for Kerr with the club providing him with an opportunity to reform his ways.
"Things could go bad pretty quickly," said Denmark-Walpole club director Joe Burton.
"But we are confident it will be all good."
Kerr is also optimistic.
"It's going to be fun going to play football and it's good to do an honest day's work," he said.
Kerr made his debut with the West Coast Eagles in 2001 - recruited from WAFL club East Fremantle - and was part of the 2006 premiership team before he retired from football at the end of the 2013 season, after a succession of injuries.
Kerr was twice runner-up in the Brownlow Medal and was an All-Australian in 2007 but his career was not without controversy.
In September 2002, he was involved in a brawl with teammate Ben Cousins at Club Bayview during end-of-season celebrations, which left Cousins with a broken arm after he fell down some stairs.
Kerr is expected to suit up for his new club on April 19 and is due to appear in court again a month later.
