MARGARET River Montessori School have taken steps to ensure the protection of the wetlands around their school.
Working closely with the Cape to Cape Catchment group, the school has created the boardwalk concept to grant safer access and expand opportunities to enter the school site in a safe and sustainable way.
The school has had their wetlands restoration boardwalk design approved by the Shire with construction to commence in the next few months.
This concept includes an environmental management plan for the whole area.
“This is quite a prized urban eco-system; it’s an asset, we want to look after it,” School council chairperson Frank Pethica said.
The students use the area to study the flora and fauna and will be actively involved in caring for it where possible according to principal Lisa Fenton.
The school was also able to receive funding from the SGIO Community grant towards the project, thanks to the votes from the community.
Ms Fenton wished to thank everyone who made the project possible, in particular the community and parent Drew Szandtner from Ambient Building Design for his ongoing assistance.
“Potentially in the future the area will be beneficial to not just the school, but the broader community,” Ms Fenton said.
With plans to maintain the area through the ongoing sale of their cookbooks, Ms Fenton said the school council, students and school community are taking the project onboard as a long term commitment.
