WHILE one of Prevelly’s favourite surfing rising stars’ Jacob Willcox is out of action due to injury, he has said Kelly Slater was not unbeatable.
Willcox knows first hand what it is like to beat the world champion, after beating him in a Championship Heat in Portugal when he was just 16.
The teenager went on to win the ISA under 16 World Title in 2013 and won two junior tour events in 2014.
However, Willcox suffered a spiral fracture in his fibular which will keep him out of the Drug Aware Margaret River Pro this month.
With his local knowledge of Surfers Point, Willcox said the competition all comes down to the condition.
His pick for the men’s division is one of his favourites, Mick Fanning.
“It’ll come down to experience and knowledge of the wave,” he said.
“Jordy Smith and Michel Bourez could also do well.”
Willcox said he would love to see an Aussie like Stephanie Gilmore, Tyler Wright or Sally Fitzgibbon take out the women’s competition.
“Carissa Moore is surfing really well at the moment – but I’d love to see Aussie to win,” he said.
April 14 will see triallers from the South West compete for the wildcard position.
April 15 will be the first day of competition with finals set to take place on 25 and 26.
