Scott Arnold has only started volunteering with St John Ambulance Australia but he is already sure that he has found his calling in life.
After suffering from a fall, Mr Arnold was inspired by the work paramedics did getting him to hospital and put his name down immediately.
"Paramedics came and got me when I broke my wrist," Mr Arnold said.
"I was working in retail and I came off the top of a ladder.
"I chatted about volunteering to the paramedics and it made sense. Helping people has always made me happy."
He found registering to be a volunteer a simple process online at stjohnchangelives.com.au, and he was soon meeting with ambulance officers and going on observations.
After going through a three-month probationary period he has completed his training modules to become a Level 1 Volunteer Ambulance Officer.
"That means I can work with the crews and attend incidents," Mr Arnold said.
"I've mostly been doing transfers.
"I really want to go career and make this my job."
Mr Arnold is just one of six million volunteers that give up their time to help make a difference in the community.
This week in National Volunteers Week and everyone is encouraged to say thank you to people who volunteer while encouraging people to sign up themselves.
"The support from Margaret River has been fantastic," Mr Arnold said.
"I was walking through IGA and someone came up and shook my hand.
"It's a good feeling."
