WITH more than 50mm of rain predicted for Saturday the Augusta Margaret River State Emergency Service unit asking the community to take precaution this weekend.
A flood warning has been issued for the South West over the next 24 hours.
SES training manager Wayne Credaro said people need to be mindful of the approaching weather conditions.
He suggested residents maintain a tidy backyard, bring all valuables inside and to keep their gutters clear to avoid harm to their property.
Mr Credaro said if the weather becomes worse to remain inside and avoid driving.
A joint alert was issued from the Department of Fire and Emergency Services and the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) today advising there was a Flood Watch for areas of the South West and Lower South West.
A cold front and rain band are forecast to approach the Capes region overnight Friday and into Saturday and extend over western parts of the State during Saturday.
Rainfall totals of 20mm to 40mm are forecast for the South West District for the 24 hours to 9am Saturday and widespread rainfall of 30mm to 50mm, with isolated falls up to 80mm, are forecast for the 24 hours to 9am Sunday.
Isolated falls are likely to be in the coastal parts of the district and with BOM warning that flooding may occur in the following catchments:
- Harvey River
- Collie River
- Preston River
- Busselton Coast Catchment
- Lower Blackwood River
- Donnelly River
- Warren River
- Shannon River
Current river levels can be seen on the Department of Water's website.
DFES is advising people to relocate equipment and livestock early so they are not caught in floodwaters, prepare an emergency kit, fill your vehicles fuel tank and watch for changes in water levels.
If driving, people should be careful at crossings and floodways as river levels may rise rapidly, obey road closure signs and take care on gravel and unsealed roads.
The department reminds people not to swim or play in floodwaters and stay out of rivers.
