We've all heard the stories of long time happily ever after married couples with kids who originally met on a sticky dance floor after one hundred too many Jaigermeisters at a ski resort. We've also all heard the stories of that same night ending in walks of shame, unreturned phone calls and bowed heads on the chairlift.
Ski resorts can be a seething pit of overcharged hormones from both sexes looking for a good time, a short time, a long time or a lifetime. Some say it's the altitude, others claim the adrenaline, still others are boosted by super power confidence after surviving a day of throwing their body to the elements down an icy slope and coming out in one piece.
Sorry guys, but most resorts work in favour of heterosexual females with a rumoured six to one ratio of men to women. Though be warned by the old mountain saying "the odds are good but the goods are odd."
If you're looking for love this ski season in Australia and New Zealand, geo apps like Tinder may help to fast track your quest for a date.
Tinder worked for the athletes at the Sochi Winter Olympics with both US Olympic gold medalist Jamie Anderson and Kiwi rider Rebecca Possum Torr spruiking the wonders of the smart phone app to meet fellow single athletes. This may account for the IOC delivering over 100,000 condoms to the athlete village for complimentary use by 7650 Olympic athletes.
Tinder also worked for Susan Zalkrind during the mammoth snow storms in Boston over the northern winter when her car was buried under snow.
She simply changed her status to "Looking for someone to shovel out my car. Nothing complicated, no strings attached, just please shovel out my car. Thanks so much." Voilà, her car was released from mounds of snow and Susan got to meet potential suitors.
Gold diggers may be keen to learn that according to the 2011 Census Thredbo in August has the highest concentration of single bachelors on high incomes if you're into that type of thing. For the record I'm not.
But whatever you're into you can be guaranteed there is an event or resort perfect for you and your Tinder app.
Coronet Peak in New Zealand hold a speed chairlift dating night in September every year. Singles line up and are matched up on a chair and sent skywards to the peak with limited time to make an impact. Then either part ways at the top or ski down together.
Keystone Resort in Colorado hold the same style event on Valentine's Day every year but if you've already met 'the one' and want to make it official then head to Loveland also in Colorado for the annual "marry me and ski for free" day also on February 14. A mass marriage ceremony is held on the top of the mountain for engaged couples who then ski or snowboard down hand in married hand. Bless.
The Frosty Fruits Gay and Lesbian Ski Week is on again this year at Hotham from August 20 to 25 with a stellar event line up including a Brown Brothers Sparkling Trippers lunch. The DNA Gay Ski Week in Queenstown is on from August 29 to September 5 with a Foam Party that is guaranteed to cause some trouble.
If you're still looking for love but swiping left on Tinder on the slopes then you could try the new GoSnow App launching this season. The app is a geographically driven meet-up app for those looking for like minded skiers and snowboarders wanting to share a ride to the snow, a chairlift, a backcountry adventure, a chairlift, a hot chocolate or a gluhwein.
