THE Augusta Margaret River Shire council has affirmed it's support of the Refugee Welcome Zone by placing pen to paper on a Welcome Refugee banner.
Shire president Michael Smart signed the banner on May 27, saying the diverse community of the area would always show support for those who wished to become a part of it.
Councillors Ian Earl and Felicity Haynes agreed with Cr Smart's sentiments, saying the community would always welcome newcomers.
The motion to pass the refugee welcome zone was met with a unanimous vote.
Cr Earl and Cr Smart said they couldn't have imagined another result, with the citizenship ceremonies a true highlight of being a part of the council.
"They so much want to be Australian citizens," Cr Earl said.
This decision makes the Augusta Margaret River Shire the second West Australian country town to be declared a refugee welcome zone after Katanning.
"It emphasises how we are as a community, progressive; we always have been," Cr Haynes said.
The signed and framed banner will be presented to the council at their next meeting on June 24 in Margaret River.
