If you have driven from Narembeen to Mt Walker in recent times, you would most likely have seen a long line of shoes hanging on a fence.
You were not imagining things; indeed around 950 shoes of all shapes, sizes and colours hang along a fence of Helen and Ross Fidge’s farm property, nicknamed the Mile of Boots.
The spectacular sight is not quite a mile, but none the less an appropriate title based on it’s development.
Mrs Fidge said the idea behind this fantastic display, came after the pair were travelling through Nebraska and took a wrong turn, coming across boots placed on a series of fence posts known as the Mile of Boots.
While Mrs Fidge thought it was very unique, it was Mr Fidge who decided to create his own version of the Mile of Boots just out of Narembeen almost two years ago.
“It took a while to take off,” Mrs Fidge said.
“Ross started off with some old shoes and then he put a sign up asking for old shoes to be donated and the next thing we knew people started dropping off shoes near the fence.
“Ross will go out to the fence and there will often be a bag of shoes just left there and the Narembeen Hardware even set up a shoe drop box.”
With the road along the route to Wave Rock, Mrs Fidge hopes that it provides a rare sight for passers-by along the plain road journey.
