After carving up the competition at the Geraldton Surfing Classic former Margaret River resident Jarrah Calder has his sights set on July’s Whalebone Classic, and the coveted Triple Crown.
Calder sits in good stead for the competition after winning this year’s open 9ft and 8ft long board titles in Geraldton.
It was the first time Calder has claimed both titles in one year.
“This has been a goal of mine for the last five years,” he said.
“It’s a pretty had thing to achieve considering the level of competition from local and state surfers.
“The difference between first and second was just half a point.”
Calder said his upbringing in Margaret River as key to his success in surfing competitions and he has fond memories of his time at the Margaret River Boardriders club.
“Growing up in the Margaret River you don’t have a choice but to surf,” he said.
“It’s part of growing up in a small town with the best surf in Australia.”
As well as the upcoming Whalebone Classic Calder is preparing for the Yallingup Surf Classic which he will need to win to defend his title of the Triple Crown Holder.
The Triple Crown series honours the contributions of the late Greg Laurenson to the Western Australia surfing community over the last 40 years.
