Police are issuing a caution to all gun owners in Margaret River following the theft of three high-powered guns over the weekend.
A 12 gauge shotgun, .22 Magnum and .223 rifle were stolen from a Margaret River property along with shotgun and magnum ammunition.
No .223 ammunition was stolen but this could be acquired for the weapon.
The guns were stolen while the owner was away for an extended period of time even though someone was checking on the house and the guns were stored in a cabinet.
“It’s a always concerning when high powered fire arms are stolen,” Margaret River Sergeant Brett Cassidy said.
Police are calling on gun owners in the area to ensure their firearms are secure in a cabinet up to current standards.
“In this case the cabinet was forced open,” Sgt Cassidy said.
“It doesn’t help when people leave their firearms for extended periods of time.”
Police are suggesting gun owners to contact a local firearms dealer if they will be away for a long period and arrange to store guns with them.
“They could also arrange for a friend to house their weapons but they would obviously need a firearms license that allowed that,” Sgt Cassidy said.
“A store may charge a fee but it is worth it to stop firearms falling into the wrong hands.”
Anyone with information that might help police with the theft is encouraged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
