A 'STAY of execution' has been requested for the old Augusta Police Station as community groups rush to find uses for the historic building.
The station will become obsolete to Augusta officers once the new $1.7 million police station is completed.
A WA Police spokeswoman said their intentions were to relocate and demolish the old police station.
There has been a push from community groups and shire councillors to find a way to save the old building given its heritage.
"The old station does not meet the threshold for inclusion on the State Register of Heritage Places, will require ongoing maintenance if left on site and inhibit any future expansion on the police site," the spokeswoman said.
"The current police station is not suitable for police purposes and no assessment has been made for other uses."
Augusta Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Doug Thompson said he was determined to see the building remain.
"I think it's worth the fight to keep it where it is," he said.
"We don't have many old buildings in Augusta. "Several groups have also said they could use it where it currently sits.
"I don't think it's in the way where it currently is."
Shire councillors previously put forward a motion to cover the costs of relocation but the idea was deemed too expensive.
Mr Thompson said the chamber was interested in using the building itself and said the local Aero Club or RSL could also look to utilise the premises.
"I don't think it will be sitting there empty," he said.
"I do understand where the shire is coming from.
"But with time we could see if we could raise funds from other sources."
Member for Warren-Blackwood Terry Redman also joined the fight to save the station and wrote to the police minister to request the building be retained due to its iconic heritage and streetscape value.
Ms Harvey said a review by the State Heritage Office had determined the existing building was unlikely to meet the threshold for inclusion on the State Register of Heritage places.
Do you know any community groups that could use the old police station?
