IT was a successful weekend of surfing for Margaret River with local lad Jed Mattinson carving his way to a maiden state championship at Geraldton over the weekend.
Mattinson picked up the blue ribbon in the under-18 division in sensational surf at Flatrocks.
He adds his name to the honour roll of past winners including Jacob Willcox, Creed McTaggart, Luke Campbell and Jack Robison.
Using the powerful waves to his advantage, Mattinson put on a one-man demolition derby in an entertaining U18s final.
Using his razor sharp backhand attack, Mattison dropped two excellent scores to amass a combined total of 16.63 (from a possible 20), to claim his second victory of the series.
"I've been doing these events for as long as I can remember and to finally capture a state title is an amazing feeling," Mattinson said. "It's been a great weekend of waves and I'm stoked to be heading to the national titles in November."
The U18 junior girls final was a closely fought affair, with Gracetown's Bailee Hastie using her smooth and graceful style to tie first equal with Denver Young.
"I really needed that result to make the state team," Hastie said. "I'm stoked with the win and it's been such a close race on the ratings between all the girls that I'm not even sure who is the state champion."
A count back was needed to decide the title, after Hastie and Young were tied on equal points after three events. In the end Young was awarded the title after previous results were used to split the surfers' performances.
The U16 cadet boys final was a pleasure to watch, with some smooth and progressive surfing being offered up by all four finalists.
Cyrus Cox was in blistering form all weekend and the talented goofy-footer shone in the U16 cadet boys final scoring a combined 15.00 (from a possible 20) to take down eventual state champion Josh Cattlin (Yallingup) in seesawing exchange.
"It's been a really fun event with great waves," Cox said. "I'm not actually sure what to say I'm just happy to be going to Nationals and want to thank my dad and family for their support."
It was all going Margaret River's way with Jamaica Selby winning the U16 cadet girls state championship, Finn Cox posted a clean sweep in the U14 grommet boys and Solomon Pouge-Englert taking out the U12 micro-groms state title.
