The Augusta Margaret River Hawks secured fourth place on the South West Football League after beating South Bunbury 87-63 on Saturday night.
It didn’t take long for the Hawks to put their stamp on the game picking up two quick goals shortly after the first bounce.
However Bunbury soon found their niche and put on a strong counter attack to bring them back into the game.
With Bunbury putting on the pressure, and conditions making kicking tough, Bunbury spent much of the half in front of their goals.
A blistering run along the wing left Jack Hick in space to put the Hawks up by one goal at the end of the quarter.
The heavens opened up in the second quarter dousing the players and making the ball tricky to hold onto.
Mitchell Gerrans was the first to take advantage of the conditions to pick up a goal which was followed up with a grubber kick from Richard Devitt that found the centre uprights.
Bunbury took a leaf out of Devitt’s book and scored a soccer-like goal to keep them in contention.
With the score 46-41 at the half the match was well and truly up for grabs.
Bunbury took the lead for the first time in the match early in the second half but Vaughn Coyler and Devitt picked up two quick goals to snatch it away.
Grant Garstone picked up the mark of the match when he claimed a high ball one metre in front of the goal which was easily converted.
With a commanding lead heading into the final quarter, and the rain now flooding in it was only a matter of winding down the clock to take out the win.
