"Feminism" is a word that strikes fear into the hearts of celebrity publicists.
Successful women from Katy Perry to Demi Moore have been caught out by a spontaneous journalist asking them to decide whether they choose to identify with the term, prompting them to mutter something about "humanism" and wait for a social media storm.
But, Emma Thompson is not one to fall into that trap.
In an interview in the September issue of Vulture, Thompson has not only said she identifies as a feminist, but a radical one at that.
"I've been a card-carrying, radical feminist since I was 19," Thompson said, adding that she was puzzled by women who do not embrace the term.
"Most women who I would want to listen to wouldn't have any problem at all with the word feminist. It's bizarre. Any woman who says they're not a feminist is basically saying that they don't believe in equal rights for women."
Radical feminism is a type of feminism which calls for the elimination of patriarchy in all contexts. Radical feminists tend to oppose women's involvement in pornography and sex work and many vocal radical feminists, such as Germaine Greer, oppose transgender women identifying as women.
The 56-year-old actor, who is currently promoting her film, A Walk In The Woods, went on to say that the way in which women criticise they physical appearance reflects "a kind of misogyny".
"Any woman who says, 'I hate my bum, I hate my body,' is essentially expressing a kind of misogyny," said Thompson. "All women who come up with that need to think very carefully about what it is they're saying. Including me!"
Thompson has often mentioned her feminism while in the public eye.
She approved of Meryl Streep's characterisation of her as a "rabid, man-eating feminist" as she presented her best actress award at the 2014 National Board of Review gala.
"I've taken my heels off as a feminist statement really," Thompson said as she accepted the award. "Because why do we wear them? They're so painful."
In an interview with Vanity Fair last year, Thompson reflected on her university days as the first female member of Cambridge University sketch troupe, Footlights, as well as her early career performing feminist stand-up comedy.
"I think I was a fairly militant feminist at the time and I wanted to do material about the sexually transmitted diseases and them being largely to do with blokes who hadn't washed themselves properly," she told the publication.
"The question of male hygiene was high on my list. I used to do a whole bit about how to wash your penis actually."
In addition to clarifying that she has no problem with the "f" word, Thompson also spoke to Vulture about Hollywood's gender age gap, where 20-something actresses are cast opposite 40-something men.
"I remember somebody saying to me that I was too old for Hugh Grant, who's like a year younger than me, in Sense and Sensibility. I said, 'Do you want to go take a flying leap?'"
In A Walk in the Woods, Thompson plays the wife of Robert Redford, who is 23 years her senior.
