TWO community organisations have joined forces to spread the message of mental health awareness to the Margaret River community.
Aftercare and Life Without Barriers representatives have engaged in creating a number of activities to spread awareness as a part of Mental Health Awareness Week from October 4-10.
“People have to take the time to think about how to be mentally healthy,” Aftercare care coordinator Lucy Akerman said.
The group have organised a Gnarabup beach clean up this Friday to combine the efforts of the community for a productive cause, fitting into the Act Belong Commit theme of the week.
“We tried to do an activity that was giving to the whole community.” Ms Akerman said.
Aftercare targets social and emotional well being for individuals experiencing psychosocial disabilities, with the service’s objective being to assist people to live independent lives in the community of their choosing.
Life Without Barriers offers out of home care for those experiencing some form of disability, providing care and support services across Australia in urban, rural and remote locations.
This includes family support and out-of-home care, disability services, home and community care for older Australians, support to refugees and asylum seekers.
The combined team will be at White Elephant Beach café this Friday to host the clean up from 10am to 1pm.
Lunch is provided with the group recommending bringing a hat, sunscreen and a rug/towel to sit on.
If bad weather occurs, the group will meet instead at the Margaret River Community Resource Centre.
