Sunday November 15 saw August Yacht Club first day of racing for the 2015/16 season.
The day was fine and mild with balmy temperatures promising a great start to the season.
Winds for the two races were completely unpredictable, blowing from all points of the compass and varying from 0kts to 10kts over the afternoon.
A fleet of 12 boats and their enthusiastic crews took to the water for an enjoyable afternoon sailing with fickle winds giving everyone a chance at the lead.
First race of the day was typical of the afternoon with Rising Damp racing away after catching a strong breeze on the start line, the rest of the field were left looking for some wind, by the first marker this situation had completely changed and the lead changed many times before the race finished two hours later, only seconds separated the leading boats.
Results Race 1:
Monohulls – First Fig Jam, second Rising Damp and third BeezNeez
Multihulls – First Dragonfly, second Buzz Box and third Yellow Cat.
The second race of the day was on a shortened course to compensate for the time taken for race one. In the light wind all boats were off to a good start and the crowded start line was no place for the faint hearted.
Fig Jam decided it was a good time to test the rules by forcing the fleet up into the wind but BeezNeez was not in a cooperative mood.
Eion Lindsay on Yellow Cat was the meat in a cat sandwich between Big Red Dwarf and the unmovable BeezNeez, sailing was secondary to survival as right of way was vigorously claimed by those involved.
Commodore Herman on The Pirate was the subject of much discussion after the pirate became intimately involved with the Leeward buoy and then tried some questionable passing manoeuvres on Rising Damp.
Results Race 2:
Mono Hull – First Fig Jam, second Seabird and third BeezNeez
Multihulls – First BuzzBox, second Yellow cat and third Dragonfly
After the racing the Commodore welcomed new members and returning members with the club going from strength to strength.
The official opening of the season is to be held on Sunday December 6, all welcome.
Following the presentation of pennants members enjoyed a BYO BBQ, a feature of all our race days.
The club invites everyone to come down and checkout our club, even if you don’t sail you can become a social member and enjoy the facilities on the banks of the Blackwood.
