STUDENTS at Karridale Primary know exactly where their food comes from, thanks to the school’s veggie garden.
Once a fortnight, several hard working volunteers put together a recess and lunch menu using the produce grown in the school’s gardens.
Last Wednesday had delicious beetroot and chocolate brownies, berry and banana smoothies, fresh tomato pasta and Spanish potato tortillas on the menu.
Volunteer Louise Flintock believes it’s important to get the children involved in every stage of the gardening process.
“The older students helped to build the garden out the front, the student’s plant, mulch, water and then finally pick the produce.
“We focus a lot on good garden practices to conserve water.”
Canteen manager Emily Davy believes the school is very lucky to have such appreciative students.
“They will pretty much try anything; they are quite sophisticated when it comes to food.
“We can only do it once a fortnight, since we are all volunteers, but the kids really look forward to it, we try to make a day of it, with nice napkins and straws for the smoothies, so they really enjoy the whole experience.”
The veggie garden has been apart of the school for the last few years, with it growing more and more popular.
