A series of non-hairy marron fishouts in river pools in the upper Margaret River will seek to protect the critically endangered species.
Stocks of the hairy marron are under threat from the invading smooth marron and active conservation programs are in place to protect remaining numbers.
The hairy marron is found only in Margaret River and has previously been listed as a species likely to become extinct, such is the vulnerability of the remaining freshwater crayfish.
The Cape to Cape Catchments Group is calling for volunteers to assist with field work activities within the fishouts, including the setting and retrieval of marron traps and assisting with data recording.
Field work will be undertaken at Canebreak and Long Pools in the Rapids Conservation Park and volunteers will be provided with transport to the location as well as a picnic lunch.
Help is needed on Tuesday, May 3 and Wednesday, May 4 with the group planning a number of subsequent dates in May and June.
Those interested in volunteering on the project are asked to contact Lyndsey Cox on 9757 2202 or via lynd sey.ccg@westnet.com.au
