The volunteers of Margaret River’s BESS Home and Community Care service are a quiet group of helpers who donate countless hours of their time to assist members of their local community who need a hand.
During National Volunteer Week centres around the state are recognising the 315,000 hours of volunteer time given each year, contributing an equivalent of more than $39 billion to the WA economy annually.
Pam and Ernie are two such local heroes who give their time to help out their neighbours.
Pam, a recent arrival to the town of Margaret River, helps a BESS client with grocery shopping and assists other clients with meals on wheels deliveries and transport to medical appointments.
“Ernie has been driving for BESS for almost four years now,” BESS coordinator Myriam Tate said.
“These are just two of the many volunteers who provide help to people in need in our community.”
BESS helps community members remain independent in their own homes, providing transport, social and recreational activities, safety maintenance and help with outings.
“Without volunteers, our transport and meals on wheels services simply would not be able to operate,” Ms Tate said.
The volunteer coordinator said volunteering was a great way for people to connect with their community and widen their social circles, as well as building a strong sense of achievement.
“Engaging in activities that provide meaning and purpose in life provides a sense of accomplishment, self-fulfillment and happiness
