A shark advice was issued for Boodjidup Beach, south of Margaret River on Thursday following the discovery of a whale carcass on the shore.
The partial carcass was reported around 11.20am at the popular surfing beach, about four kilometres south of Surfers Point.
The warning issued by Shark Smart advised the decomposing carcass may bring sharks closer to shore, increasing the risk to swimmers and surfers.
Department of Parks and Wildlife officers moved quickly to begin removal of the carcass and a few surfers in the water at Gnarabup were unfazed by the warnings.
“No, it doesn’t worry me at all,” said surfer Tahe Maeda as he prepared to paddle out.
“I just want to surf in Margaret River, I think the risk is low so I will just have a quick surf today.”
Beachgoers are urged to take additional caution at Boodjidup Beach and surrounding areas, and to report any shark sightings to the Water Police on 9442 8600.
