To recognise the 20th National Reconciliation Week, students from St Thomas More Catholic Primary school created a ‘Sea of Hands’ celebrating their appreciation of indigenous Australian culture.
Students spent time decorating the paper hands with various designs before they were ‘planted’ across the lawn beneath the school’s Australian and Aboriginal flags.
Year 3 classroom teacher Demi Wright said the project and the week itself was the ideal time for students to join the reconciliation discussion.
“The Sea of Hands symbolises our support for reconciliation, rights and respect,” Ms Wright said.
“Creating the hands gave us opportunities to discuss the importance of building respectful relationships between all Australians, as well as exploring how we can all join the national reconciliation effort.
“The children really enjoyed decorating their own reconciliation hands and celebrating indigenous Australian culture through stories, music and art.”
