Running duo Martin Tonna and Bec Hannan are celebrating after their successful completion of the 135km Cape to Cape Track in under 24 hours.
Setting off from Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse at mid-afternoon, the runners battled cold and wet winter conditions along the track as the sky darkened, and pressed on even when Ms Hannan suffered a hamstring injury along the way.
The pair launched their campaign to raise money for Youth Care Margaret River, which provides support and mentor programs to schools between the Capes.
“These guys did such an amazing job,” said Youth Care representative Marg Lindsay after the run, adding that the duo had managed to raise close to $5000 for the organisation.
“We decided to raise funds for youth at risk as there is an alarming amount of youth within our community that either don’t have adequate support at home or their parents are struggling financially to provide them with some of their basic needs,” Ms Hannan said before the run.
“We wanted to keep it local so the money raised stays here to support our community.”
Mrs Lindsay said the money raised during the campaign would be put to very good use.
“We now have money for our wonderful chaplains who work in our local schools to support youth at risk and families within our community,” she said.
“Youth Care Margaret River cannot thank them enough.”
