Settlers Tavern staff are preparing for one of their busiest nights of the year, with the annual Margaret River Primary School RockFest landing at the venue tonight.
Five rock bands from the school will perform to a packed crowd of parents, teachers and tavern-goers with proceeds from donation tins going directly to the school music program.
The program was established over five years ago after tavern owners Rob and Karen Gough heard of the school’s struggle to equip keen music students with instruments and sound equipment.
"The first thing we helped with was an organ, back when there were hardly any instruments available to students and the late Gordon Andrews brought the issue to our attention,” Mrs Gough said.
“Over the years we’ve been able to help the music department extend with new instruments and technical equipment including amplifiers and iPads.”
MRPS music specialist Helen Collis said the support from Settlers was invaluable.
“Some of these kids will be our future music stars, but more importantly Rob and Karen and the Settlers team are allowing us to develop skills that we wouldn’t be able to grow if it wasn’t for their backing,” Ms Collis said.
Donation jars placed on the bar of the tavern are regularly filled by patrons, with all donation amounts matched by the venue owners.
As well as the regular donations throughout the year, the bi-annual special open mic night attracts around 250 people who are encouraged to donate during the concert.
“It really is one of our favourite events, even though the logistics of having that many kids and adults in the tavern can be a challenge,” Mrs Gough said.
“Settlers is for everyone - the kids are here with their parents having dinner regularly; this is our way of showing our support for our community in a tangible, hands on way.”
The Margaret River Primary School RockFest kicks off at 5pm today, Wednesday June 22 at Settlers Tavern. Entry is free and all donations go directly to the school music program.
