As South West junior football players leave the field at the end of their weekly training, an exciting new team is stepping into the spotlight.
This time the team has one big thing in common – they’re all mums, and they are in training to take on the Dunsborough Dragon Slayers in September.
Originating in Dunsborough as a charity match to raise funds for their two primary schools, the Mum’s Charity Game has grown to become one of the biggest events on the Capes sporting calendar and 2016 is the first year a team from Margaret River will clash with the players from the North.
All funds raised by the Margaret River team will be donated to local cancer support charity, River Angels.
Under the skillful guidance of coach Dave Noske, 40 women have jumped on board to play and Mr Noske said he was “pleasantly surprised” by the quick uptake of skills and high energy of the team already displayed at weekly training.
To settle on a name for the team, an online competition was held with some eyebrow raising entries submitted by community members and friends of the team.
“There were some entries that were really very funny, but not really appropriate for a charity match,” said team captain Charlotte O’Beirne.
The team settled on the AMRzons, a name submitted by local resident Deb George.
“It’s a play on Augusta Margaret River of course, as well as a band of strong warrior women,” Ms O’Beirne said.
With training well underway, the team is now seeking local businesses keen to back the team with naming and sponsorship opportunities available and Ms O’Beirne urged locals to consider supporting the mums.
“Previous games have had an attendance over 3000 people so it will be a fantastic opportunity to promote local businesses to a large proportion of our region.”
The AMRzons train on Wednesday evenings from 5pm to 6pm at Nippers Oval in Margaret River.
