The ramifications of an unprecedented exit from the EU are largely unknown for those who polled in favour of Brexit in the UK on Friday.
But, for me, one thing about the future of Britain is clear.
It will take a long time for it to get out from under the dark cloud caused by this ugly, divisive debate.
In the weeks leading up to the vote I saw nothing but a Britain filled with hate - spurred by political campaigns punctuated with lies, overt racism and poisonous rhetoric.
I have seen lifelong friends descend into unintelligible, full-blown slanging matches on social media and watched the British tabloids perpetuate this anger by exploiting the trust of voters.
And this division, which sets Britain back to a time where it was clearly defined by class, age and region, will not go away any time soon.
It is now left with a Prime Minister in a seemingly untenable position. It's left with an angry 16 million people who, so vociferously, wanted to remain. And it's left with an uncomfortable wait to find out what the full impact of its decision may be.
For me, it will genuinely be hard to look at some people in the same light after hearing their position on a debate that centred around very emotionally-fuelled topics like immigration, democracy and Britain's position in the world.
It took an unparalleled amount of restraint not to turn on the old caps lock and add to the shouty anger on social media.
I chose instead to bide my time in the hope some sensible, rational soul would comment on my behalf, with some actual facts.
Worryingly it didn't always come.
And so instead I witnessed a disturbing level of hatred for anyone not a "born and bred Brit". A worrying lack of understanding about democracy and Britain's own political system, and a bizarre 19th century-esque sense of grandeur about the UK's position in the world.
What bullshit.
It was staggering how many Brits clogged up the internet with "facts" about the European Parliament as being unelected.
Britain does vote for members of that parliament. It did so a whole two years ago. You probably just didn't turn up to have your say.
And trade! Apparently, according to Facebook, 94 per cent of Brits are now experts on the free market economy, of all things.
Gary, the butcher you used to play pool with down the shitty local, is confident "emerging economies like Brazil, India and China will come to the table with trade agreements that won't be subjected to inflated tariffs or taxation."
Seriously Gaz, I've seen you struggle to feed yourself.
And don't get me started on immigration.
If one more person says immigrants "come and claim our welfare and steal our jobs" I will explode. They literally can not be doing both. It makes no sense.
And "have you seen those illegal immigrants at the French border trying to sneak in and bring country down."
Please stop.
Firstly, if they're "illegal", pulling out of the EU makes no difference. And secondly leaving the EU could actually mean Britain loosening its border control as it bids to renegotiate trade (it's very boring stuff about the Schengen Agreement, Frontex and Britain's trade position. I suggest hitting Gaz up for a full run-down)
And so now Britain's out of the EU. And guess what?
Immigrants will still come. Britain will still have a less democratic body than the European Parliament in the House of Lords, and trade with members of the EU - a market that takes up to 50 per cent of its exports - could become nightmarish.
But, what won't change, is the impact this debate has had on its people.
Whatever happens in the next few years with its economy, migration or democracy, there is a very real chance that talking about these things have divided the people there irreparably
Maybe many will leave for France or Spain to get away from the anger and hatred.
