THE Margaret River Gropers have etched their name in the record books becoming the first team to win four straight South West Rugby Championships after an emphatic victory over Collie. A crowd gathered to cheer on the home side in perfect conditions while Collie brought a strong squad determined to spoil the party.
The Gropers were prepared for a physical onslaught and threw their bodies on the line, continually stopping the Mongrels in their tracks. Coach Mark Sheath had pushed the game plan in preparation, focusing on speed and tactics to tire out the less mobile opposition. The pressure applied by the Gropers soon paid dividends and they were on the board after five minutes with a try out wide before adding another penalty to take an 8-0 lead.
Collie returned the favour with a penalty to make it 8-3. Stoic defence and brilliant individual efforts saw them increase their lead 18-3 at the break and Gropers could smell blood, hitting the ground running in the second half. Another three well-worked tries and a penalty ensued with the only hiccup a try to Collie late in the game.
It was a well-deserved victory after eight months of hard yakka. The Gropers would like to thank their loyal supporters; all sponsors without whom the club could not exist; and coach Mark Sheath for providing direction in the latter half of the year. A massive shout out to Narelle and Steve Rodley and Jody Busby for amazing work all year as well as the families and partners of players for their support.
