Imagine spending an entire day cleaning up a popular nature spot, and clearing 20,000 pieces of rubbish, only to have someone dump their household rubbish in the same area just weeks later.
Locals in the Perth southern suburb of Coogee and surrounds are disgusted by the number of people using the area as a dumping ground.
The latest incident occurred last week, only weeks after community members had rallied together with Sea Shepherd to clear half a tonne of rubbish from Woodman Point - a popular park and beach area.
The Department of Parks and Wildlife was forced to remove the large pile of litter, which included a couch, desk, car bumper and outdoor table, which had been illegally dumped on the side of a road.
City of Cockburn community development manager Gail Bowman said illegal dumping was an ongoing concern for the area – despite the council offering free trip runs to residents.
"The city owns a landfill which offers all our domestic properties six trailer passes annually," she said.
"The city also offers two hard and two green bulk waste verge collections annually to domestic properties."
On July 30, more than 120 community volunteers cleared 20,500 pieces of rubbish from the area. The mess weighed some 1.5 tonnes.
"The park and beach looked spiffy," Steve Grant posted on the Cockburn Chat Facebook page at the time.
The latest spate of illegal dumping follows local fishermen at Woodman Point's Ammo Jetty labelling some anglers fishing tactics as "disgraceful", after images emerged online of dozens of salmon lying in pools of blood.
The public outcry led to the Department of Fisheries and Recfishwest patrolling the area to encourage better fishing practices.
