The Margaret River region once again scored numerous nods at the 2016 delicious Produce Awards held in Sydney this week.
The region was named the reader’s choice overall for most Outstanding Region and the Margaret River Busselton Tourism Association’s Matt Norton was on hand to collect the award on Monday night.
MRBTA chief executive Pip Close said the region’s second consecutive win was a mark of the quality and talent in the South West.
The Margaret River region really is home to some of this country’s most outstanding food and wine experiences so it’s wonderful to see the region celebrated in this way for the second time,” said Ms Close.
“Margaret River Gourmet Escape, now in it’s fifth year, has certainly helped to elevate our profile as a food and wine destination unlike any other, and we look forward to welcoming the world's culinary superstars into the region again in November.
Attending the awards to represent the Margaret River Farmers Market which narrowly missed the top prize for the country’s most outstanding farmers market, Katrina Lombardo said recognition for the region was growing every year.
“The nominations that the region’s producers receive year after year is a clear indication that we are delivering some of the highest quality food in the country,” she said.
WA entrants performed best in the ‘From the Paddock’ category, where The Farm House Margaret River picked up a gold medal for their famed Arkady Lamb alongside White Rocks Veal, sourced from Brunswick farmers.
Despite nominations in a number of other categories, the WA trophy cabinet was surprisingly bare with Eastern States producers collecting the majority of the awards, chosen this year by a panel of celebrity chefs and food experts.
At the gala event, host and chef Matt Moran said the Australian food industry was blossoming.
“Every year I am so excited by the quality of produce,” Mr Moran said.
“This year I tasted some of the best seafood, organic vegies and cheese I have ever tasted.
“As a chef, it is a really exciting time for the Australian food industry and so much of that comes down to the quality and accessibility of our produce.”
