End of an era: Radio 6PR's Bob Maumill signs off for the last time

But always fun, passionate, and up for a laugh with a wicked sense of salty humour.

Colleagues and callers alike have paid tribute, warts and all, to Radio 6PR's Bob Maumill, who signed off from a broadcasting career spanning more than four decades.

Mr Maumill quit the Radio 6PR afternoon slot in early 2010 because of ongoing pain following a major hip operation.

But his retirement was short-lived, as he returned to Radio 6PR to host his own Sunday morning show and taking the reins of afternoons when fellow broadcasters went on holidays.

His final broadcast for Radio 6PR on Sunday was a rollercoaster ride of envelope pushing stories, laugh out loud jokes and nostalgia.

Mr Maumill even got a Twitter tribute from Soa The Hulk Palelei - a UFC fighter who once challenged the veteran broadcaster to an arm wrestle - and lost.

​In the final minutes of the show, when asked how he'd enjoyed working at Radio 6PR, the 78-year-old was typically laconic.

"​It's been like a love affair with a really rough woman, what's gone on between us. They're best fun of all! "

And so, with Mental As Anything's track "Live It Up" playing him out, Mr Maumill thanked his listeners for the last time - but hinted at something more.

"To everyone out there it's been fun, stick with our radio station and our paths will cross again, thank you every one."

Mr Maumill continues to be a trainer and prominent figure in WA's racing industry.
