The annual Augusta Margaret River Shire Garage Sale Trail is on again as part of a nationwide campaign to encourage people to sell, reuse and reconnect with their community.
Over 10,000 individual sales will be held around Australia later this month supported by local governments attracting over 300,000 shoppers.
Initially starting in a single Australian suburb, the ‘trail’ concept, where groups are shuttled between their local garage sales on a shopping tour of sorts, has since been adopted by councils in the United Kingdom and continues to grow in popularity.
Shoppers and fellow sale holders can vote for their favourite event, while large-scale combined sales will be held in some towns, particularly in areas where garage space is limited.
AMR Shire President Ian Earl said the event was a positive community activity that gave everyone the chance to make some extra cash and uncover unique bargains.
“The Garage Sale Trail is a simple idea that encourages people to consider how things can be reused whilst also providing an opportunity to raise money,” Mr Earl said.
“The idea of passing on what you don’t want to a new home is truly a great form of sustainability.”
This year the Shire is planning to provide a free bus trip around the region to ensure the local garage sales receive plenty of visitors on the day.
“Those who want to sit back and relax on our bus whilst being guided through a trail of pre-loved treasures can register their interest with Shire.”
So far over 7,700 garage sales have been registered boasting over $6.3 million worth of goods up for sale.
