The Margaret River Boardriders Club snared victory in the prestigious Surf Boardroom Surf League last week, pipping rival clubs Yallingup, Trigg Point and City Beach for the title.
The hard-fought battle was fitting for the 30th instalment of the event, now the longest running tag team surfing event in WA. Each club nominated six of their best surfers to compete at the Scarborough Beach event with over $5,000 in prizes on offer.
Margaret River Boardriders posted a team total of 77.90 to secure their first win in the event since 2012.
Margaret River captain Andrew Sheridan said the club took great pleasure in participating in the popular event.
"It's been an unbelievable day, I think I’ve competed in almost every one of these events and they just keep getting better,” Sheridan said.
“The waves have been fun and we’re stoked to come away with the win today and want to thank The Surf Boardroom and all the clubs for a sick day.”
Local surfer Jerome Forrest also took top individual honours, awarded the Perry Hatchett Medal for best individual performance in the final.
His impressive 7.83 out of a possible 10 points followed by a huge 9.67 guaranteed the win for his club.
“We drove up this morning from and we were deadest on winning,” said Forrest.
“We last won in 2012 and there’s always been a rivalry between us and Yallingup, so I’m just really glad to have done my part to get the win.”
