Horse and pony fans are in for a treat this weekend as the Margaret River Wine Region Dressage Spectacular kicks off on Saturday and continues through Sunday, boasting impressive displays from some of the nation’s best and brightest riders.
Sue Jackman of the Margaret River Horsemans and Pony Club, which will host the two-day event, said the programme would celebrate everything dressage, with classes on offer for beginners, Pony Club riders, amateurs and professionals.
“One of the highlights of the weekend will include riders competing in the Freestyle classes where they have to choreograph their own workout with required dressage movements for their level of competition,” Mrs Jackman said.
“They then have to match this perfectly to music that fits their horses’ footfalls.”
Mrs Jackman said the freestyle event was entertaining even for those without much interest in horses.
As well as all different levels of dressage from the basic through to very complex movements, classes are offered for Pony Club riders with the team competitions always a hot favourite at the annual event.
Judges from around the State and at least one high-level interstate judge will appear, and Mrs Jackman said securing officials was not difficult given the hospitality shown in the region.
“The same goes for the competitors who love to ride on the lovely grassed ovals at Gloucester Park and the adult riders enjoy the fruits of the regions vignerons as part of their prizes,” she said.
“Various equestrian sponsors also travel to attend the event which this year will see over 400 tests ridden over the Saturday and Sunday.”
The event is the club’s major fundraiser for the year and could possibly be the last held at the Gloucester Park venue, with the Shire’s redevelopment plans threatening to force relocation next year.
Entry is free for spectators on both days and a coffee van and canteen service will be available onsite.
