The WFI Augusta Masters drew 106 players from across WA (and one from Scotland) to battle for the coveted Green Jacket and Ladies Green Jumper over the weekend. Played over 36 holes, Day 1 saw Neil Marlow of Nannup in a fantastic round, scoring 47 to lead the 72 male competitors, 8 more than his nearest challenger, former winner Peter McKenna and 3 others on 39. Marlow needed all his fighting skills on Day 2 to back up his lead, just holding on with 36 for a total of 83 to win. Marlow secured the jacket by one point from fellow Nannup player Graham Happ. Best gross went to Kevin Burton after some great shot making, third was Augusta’s Geoff McPherson (79), Peter McKenna (77).
While that battle was taking place, 34 ladies were battling for their coveted Green Jumper in a tight contest between 2015 winner Kerryn Thorpe and club president Leanne Ettridge. Thorpe posted a score of 76, only to be equalled by Ettridge, who nudged ahead as winner on countback and took home the Green Jumper. Third was Shirley Swarbrick (73), from Kerry Borgas (72) and Sue Air (71).
The excellent condition of the course – tribute to volunteers who put in many hours of work – coupled with great weather, camaraderie and spirit of the game made it a perfect way to end the season at the club. Men’s 9 hole midweek scroungers and Summer Sunday golf with Pat Cunningham will continue as planned.
