Margaret River locals Martin and Kristi Head are preparing to officially launch their 2016 Christmas lights display this weekend at Lilac Link, and as usual, proceeds from the increasingly popular local attraction will go directly to cancer charity, River Angels.
Along with kids Shenae and Aidan, the duo have embraced the festive spirit for a number of years and the tradition has now spread to neighbouring properties on the Riverslea street.
“I actually help some of the neighbours out with lights here and there, if they want to decorate but don’t have the time or resources,” electrician Martin said as he made last minute adjustments to the metres of LED lighting and dancing figures across his front yard.
“It started with Kristi, she’s the real Christmas-Easter-Halloween-celebration person in the family, and it just grew each year,” he said.
The family decided to begin collecting for River Angels when they realised how many people were passing by each night.
“We thought it was a great chance to give back to the community and it’s all part of the Christmas spirit,” said Kristi.
“We get so many people coming past with their kids, being summer there’s heaps of families who use the excuse to get out and go for a walk, and take in the lights around the neighbourhood.
The annual street party boasts food vans, a cake stall, games and even a visit from Santa Claus himself during the celebrations.
Margaret River residents have been out in force over the last two weeks, snapping up boxes of lights and spending hours threading glittering cables around their homes.
The Lilac Link street party kicks off from 6.30pm this Saturday December 10 and closes at 8.30pm, with all proceeds to River Angels.
The Head family’s Christmas lights will be on throughout the festive season and further donations to River Angels can be made onsite.
