Tez from Liverpool (her user name on Gumtree) has been selling unwanted gifts online since 2011, but only after they've received a dose of gratitude.
Before Christmas, she was selling a 2006 American Budweiser beer holiday stein for $40 that she was given by an American friend.
The collector set, "Sunset at the stables", depicts a horse-drawn carriage being driven by cowboys in Santa hats through a sunset-lit snow scene. It hits a bull's-eye for American cliches but it doesn't quite sum up the Australian experience or Tez.
"It was an odd gift to give someone," Tez said. She doesn't drink.
"But I took it, and said, 'Thanks very much. I love sunsets and stables'."
Tez's rules on regifting include showing gratitude for the gift, keeping it in the cupboard for least two years, trying to find another home (offering it to family to regift or selling it at garage sales) and not unwrapping it.
"I accept with joy, and release it with joy. What's the point of [it] being in a wardrobe? It is doing nothing, when someone else could be using it."
After the Christmas and Hanukkah seasons of giving, it is now the season for regiving.
About 10 millon Australians are estimated to have passed a gift on to someone else, double the number last year, found a survey released on Boxing Day by online site, Gumtree.
In 2015, sales on the site jumped 28 per cent in the week after Christmas as Australians went online to get rid of an unwanted gift.
Selling online can avoid embarrassment, suggests a survey of 1257 people in November 2016 by Galaxy Research for Gumtree.
It found an estimated 2.8 million Australians would prefer to sell a gift online rather than let the giver know the gift didn't hit the mark.
As many as 300,000 Australians admitted to mistakenly giving the unwanted gift back to the person who gave the original gift. Only 8 per cent said they were caught out.
Regifting is so common that a company on eBay even offers certificates of regifting from Frugal State University. (Try regifting that for the ultimate joke.)
So my question is how do you regift a $2000-plus trampoline that has sat like a lonely white elephant in the garden for a year?
It is not as if our friends and relatives won't recognise this barely touched Christmas gift to my twin sons.
This Christmas just gone I regifted a set of unopened DVDS. I had bought them for my son the year before and gave them to him for Christmas.
They promised to unlock secrets of magic never revealed before. He really wanted them, but he didn't even look at them, let alone unlock their secrets, the first time.
So this year I gave them back to him in fresh wrapping. He seemed pleased. That's magic.
